College was a hell of a lot different than high school. It required more studying, for instance. Something Skyler wasn't used to. She did well in high school, even when she wasn't taking the time to study. College, on the other hand, required her to study almost constantly. She had picked her major in the hopes that it would be on the easier side of learning, but she was quickly realizing English wasn't as easy as she had hoped. She still wasn't quite sure of her major, but she hadn't found her passion yet. Skyler wasn't bold enough to do acting or confrontational enough to be in a business-type career. English had been her comfort subject in high school, and she figured she could at least teach with her degree. Even though she didn't think she'd make a very good teacher.
She sat in her bed and sighed. Skyler's roommate kept coming in and out of the dorm room, blaring loud music and overall being loud and obnoxious. Skyler gathered up her books and shoved them in a bag. Maybe a quieter place would help her study a little better. She had been studying in the coffee shop too much lately, and she didn't want them to think she was loitering there just for the free WIFI. So she decided the library would be the best place for her. At least she wouldn't spend any money there. Unless she got distracted by online shopping, which was entirely possible. As if on cue, Skyler's roommate walked into the room, slamming the door open, as if she was frustrated. Skyler quickly finished shoving her things into her bag, and avoided looking at the other girl. She didn't want to get dragged into the drama while she was trying to study. She slipped her bag over her shoulder and fled out the door towards the library.
Skyler entered the library, and searched for an empty table. The library was fairly crowded, and she couldn't seem to find very many places open. She sat down at a small table that was shoved into the corner of the room. It was about the only table left where there wasn't a person. Skyler couldn't figure out why the library was so busy, but at least it was quiet. Everyone seemed to be studying, or at least having quiet conversations among themselves. She pulled out her books, and began to take notes.

Edd didn’t want to spend his time studying inside at the library, but he had no choice. The assignment he had to complete was due tomorrow and it required extensive use of the internet for research. He honestly shouldn’t have procrastinated on it for this long. Hell, the assignment was interesting enough, but he still found himself dragging his feet to do it. It was probably the writing portion of it – Edd wasn’t feeling enthusiastic about actually sitting down and writing 6 pages of a design proposal.
Armed with his cheap old laptop, his drawing notebook with the sketch he’d drawn for the assignment, and his headphones, Edd entered the library. It was crowded, and he bit his lip. It seemed he wasn’t the only person putting off an assignment. Either that, or all these people really were that desperate to just hang out in the library.
Outside the windows, the sun was shining brightly, taunting Edd that he was stuck indoors. He tried to find an available space, but grimaced when he saw no seats available. The most vacant of his options was a table, with one girl focusing on her notes. He could see no other vacancies. Even other tables were full, unless he wanted to sit directly beside someone.
So, Edd approached the one table that was as close to empty as possible, and cleared his throat before setting his bag on the table.
”Sorry, this is the only seat available.” he said, though he wasn’t going to apologize or ask permission to sit there. There were no reservations for tables in the library and if she was meeting some partners for a project they could go meet in a dorm room or something if the library was this populated. He opened his bag and pulled his laptop out, followed by his notebooks.

Skyler was lost in her own world, focusing on studying now that she had some quiet time. Her roommates had been ridiculous, and they weren't normally that bad. She had no idea why they were acting out all of a sudden. She was hoping it wasn't anything she did. Skyler shook her head. This wasn't what she needed to be focusing on. She gritted her teeth, and went back to working on her notes. English wasn't a crazy hard subject for her, but she hated the research papers. They took her forever to come up with anything, including the subject of the paper. She never knew what to write about. Luckily, this time around, her teacher had given them topics to write about, and they just had to do the research. Her topic had been the wage gap. Something she was quite familiar with anyways. But she had to have the formal sources and all of that jazz.
Skyler looked up as a boy sat down with her, and nodded. "No worries," she said, moving her stuff closer to her, instead of having it all over the table. "I'm Skyler," she offered, with a smile. She knew she should be studying, but she couldn't help introduce herself to the person sitting with her. She didn't want to be rude.

Edd nodded to Skyler, once she moved her things he shifted his notebooks to span his side of the table. His laptop booted up, and he plugged in headphones to mute the noise. He’d have to listen to a few videos as part of his sources, but he was putting that off for as long as he could. He didn’t want to have to focus on the drab, boring way the mechanics talked about the inner workings of the model plane he was drafting.
Even though it was a subject he loved, they found a way to make it sound boring.
Edd left his headphones to the side of his laptop, turning to look at the girl who introduced herself. She seemed friendly enough, which was more than he expected – the library was usually filled with people who were so engrossed in their work that they sneered at anyone else. He smiled back, though it was somewhat awkward, more of him pressing his lips together than a genuine smile.
”Nice to meet you, i’m Edd. Facing the music for procrastinating my assignment,” he sighed, gesturing to his books and laptop. ”I take it i’m not alone. You’d think there was a party going on in here or something.”

Studying in the library wasn't the normal thing for Skyler to do, but this time had been necessary. But she also never imagined that it would be this busy. It was getting close to midterms, but still. She had been lucky to get there and find a table.
"Nice to meet you, Edd" she said, smiling at the boy across from her. She wasn't quite sure what to think of him yet, but at least he hadn't rejected her introduction. She nodded, and gestured to her work as well. "Right?" she laughed. "I was surprised when I walked in!" She returned her focus to her notes for a few minutes, jotting down the last thing she had read on the website. Skyler had just figured out where to begin with her paper, and it was due soon. She almost hated herself for the procrastination.
She looked back up at the boy, curious. "What's your major?" she asked, noticing his notes didn't look quite familiar to her. It wasn't a subject she had taken, anyways. Though she had stuck to the basics. This was only her second semester at UCH. She had started late, deciding to wait a year before going to college. She hadn't done much in that year, except balance her medications. And for that, she was grateful. She knew she wouldn't be able to do well in college without them.

Edd looked around the library, watching as a group of three more students entered. Good luck finding a spot, he thought, and they seemed to have the same idea as they shuffled around looking for a table. Edd was thankful the table didn’t have any more room – Skyler was friendly and definitely enough of a distraction for his work. Otherwise, he’d get absolutely nothing done.
”It actually makes me feel popular for once. I’m surrounded by people all doing the same activity as me.” He said, waving a finger in the air. It was different than a party for sure – the few times he’d been dragged into the party scene it had just about this many people. It really was quite wild.
At her question he rolled his shoulders. ”Engineering. I basically want to build engines. Specifically planes.” He said, allowing her to see the sketch of a plane’s engine before him.
”The assignment my dumb ass procrastinated is one of the biggest grades of the semester, of course… I get to propose a plan to build this thing. Which requires way more citations and references than it should if it’s an original design,” he groaned. He had to theorize how it would run, he had to point out earlier examples of successes that were similar in concept to his work… it was so much more difficult than how he originally thought it would go: just put pieces together until it worked. In theory, that worked, but in order to get professional grants, you had to prove your hypothesis would work. ”What are you stuck doing? Sorry if I’m distracting you, I just really don’t want to focus.”

Skyler almost laughed when she saw the three students walk into the library. There really wasn't much room for them at all. Unless they wanted to sit on the floor. The boy across from her had been lucky that he had walked in when he did. She had been as well. If she had been any later, she would be sitting on the floor doing her research. Skyler probably wouldn't have minded that too much. As long as she had the quiet she needed, she would have been happy.
"Almost as if it's a party," she smiled at him. She wasn't one for the party scene, honestly. Not unless she was on her "high" days. When medicated, she was quite the calm one. But on her high days, she was a wild child. She would party all night and into the morning, given the chance. Since being medicated, she avoided the party scene. It helped her learn who she really was. "But much quieter," she said, scanning the room. It was amazing how quiet it was with the amount of people in the room.
She looked at the sketch he was showing her. It was beyond her scope of practice, but she looked at it with amazement. It was crazy how one person could build something so intricate. She would never be able to do something that creative. "That's amazing," she said, glancing up from the sketch to the boy. "Why planes?" she asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.
Skyler nodded in agreement, and gestured to her notes in front of her. "Same here," she said. "I procrastinated this research paper, and now I'm scrambling to find the right research links. I have the paper in my head, but for some reason, the professor wants proof." She understood the need for the research, but she hated the fact she had to do the work. "The paper is about the wage gap between men and women. It's an okay topic, I guess," she said. "And no worries, I don't mind a little bit of distraction."
