and all the people say you can't wake up, this is not a dream you're part of a machine, you are not a human being with your face all made up, living on a screen low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
Skyler couldn't believe she was actually at Carbor Harbor. College was a whole new world for her. She had finally been able to balance herself out well enough that she believed she was ready for college. Hopefully she wasn't wrong. Starting college in January wasn't standard, but she had always been a bit different than everyone else. Why not change things up anyways? There were enough classes to take her in. Especially as an English major. She wasn't quite sure what her plans were with her degree, but she was sure she would figure it out. She could always teach, if she didn't find anything else.
She walked to the coffee shop on campus, in desperate need of some caffeine. It was a bit late, around six in the evening, but she loved coffee at all times of the day. She would still be able to sleep at a decent time, anyways. She walked up to the barista, giving a soft smile. "What can I get for you today?' the barista asked her. "Uhm, probably just a large coffee, with a shot of espresso. I'll add the cream and sugar over there," she said, gesturing towards the table where everything was laid out for anyone. "Please and thank you." She paid for her coffee and stepped to the side for others to be able to order while she waited for her coffee. She probably could have made the drink at home, but she had wanted to get out of her dorm room. The barista handed her the coffee, and after she made it the way she enjoyed it, she went and sat down at a table to sip on it.

Vincent often times came to the Java House in the later evenings to get his caffeine fix and study or read a book. If you knew his background he wasn't like what most people expected. The young man was quiet, shy and kept to himself. He wasn't much into socializing. Not because he didn't like it but he was just completely awkward when it came to talking to people he didn't know. Coming and sitting around at the Java House, ordering his coffee and maybe saying a few words to some one here and there was just about as social as he usually got. It was pretty sad. Currently he was dressed in a light blue dress shirt and a tie, he looked more like a business man than a college student.
His eyes went back and fourth between a text book and jotting down notes in his notebook, intensely taking in what he was reading. Lost in the materials in front of him he wasn't paying much attention when he picked up his coffee and attempted to take a sip. Sadly the lid wasn't on tight and he managed to spill part of it all over his text book. Mumbling a few choice words to himself he frantically looked for some napkins, at which there were none at his table. The table next to him, now occupied by a girl that he hadn't even seen sit down did however have some. He stood up and cautiously walked towards her, he was never all that good at talking to girls and it made him nervous. Even asking for something as simple as a Napkin. He cleared his throat as he approached her Would you mind if I borrowed some napkins he asked. Figuring it would have been rude to just help himself since the table was occupied.

The Java House was usually quiet during the evenings. Not too many people were urging for caffeine in the later hours. Though, there were a select few. Skyler being one of them. Coffee was a bad habit for her. And it honestly didn't mix well with her medications. Caffeine wasn't a great help when it came to psychiatric drugs. But she didn't care. And what her psychiatrist didn't know wouldn't hurt. Her bipolar disorder was fairly well managed with her medications, and as long as she remembered to take them, she would be okay. She didn't need another fuck-up in her life. Skyler had made plenty of mistakes before she had been diagnosed. The bad thing about being bipolar without medications, is when the high phase kicks in, you don't realize it. The high phase feels good. She felt like she was on top of the world. She could do anything, without thinking about the repercussions the things she did would bring. She was reckless and out of control. And then she'd hit her low, and her world would come crashing down around her. Skyler was glad she was able to get help when she did. Before she caused too much chaos in her own life.
In her thoughts, she hadn't noticed the man at the table next to hers. So when he approached her, she jumped. Just ever so slightly. He might have not even noticed, but she wasn't sure. "You can have them," she joked, "I don't want them back." She smiled at the man. He seemed nervous. "If you want to, you can join me?" she offered. She hadn't met very many people at the university yet. It definitely wouldn't hurt her.

Vincent did notice her jump slightly, Sorry I didn't mean to startle you he said looking a bit apologetic. He wasn't the smoothest when it came to announcing his arrival to people or the fact that he was even there. Typically he just blended in with the crowed and was a nobody. Okay I'll throw them awayhe said not quite getting the joke. Then it hit him and his face turned slightly red. For how smart he was he could be a bit clueless in social situations especially when talking with girls. It was obvious he had no moves with the ladies.
Then she invited him to join her. That was knew, he didn't often get invited to join people unless it was family or having to deal with the family business. He wanted to say no and run as far away as he could, especially after making his stupid remark to her joke. If he stayed this would probably be a awkward disaster on his part. Yet he couldn't exactly say no either, that would be rude. Maybe he should just take his families advice and come out of his comfort zone to meet people.
He nodded his head sure, just give me a minute to clean this up he said managing to give a nervous smile. This was typical college student stuff though right? Meeting people and chatting over coffee. He went back to his table and quickly clean off the coffee before packing up his other books. Leaving the wet textbook open to dry out for a few minutes. He then returned to the girl and took a seat. My name is Vincent Altman, I'm a business major and a Senior he said, somehow he felt like a new kid back in high school when you show up after class has already started and the teacher introduces you as the new kid and insists on you introducing yourself by telling your life story.

Skyler shrugged it off. She had only jumped because she was lost in her own thoughts. In reality, she should have been paying more attention to her surroundings. She knew the guy had been in the coffee shop, but she hadn't given much thought to him. That is, until he showed up at her table. "It's all good," she said. She really didn't mind being bothered. She enjoyed the distraction, anyways. She giggled at him, as he missed the joke. "Probably a good idea," she smiled, doing her best to be kind. She didn't want to embarrass him any more than he already seemed to be. He seemed like a nice guy, but not quite used to speaking to people. Or at least girls. She couldn't quite tell, but she was guessing so.
She was a bit surprised when he agreed to join her. She hadn't expected him to agree, especially after the first part of their encounter. But she was glad he did. She could use the company. And meeting new people was always a good thing. As long as she didn't end up in bed with them, that is. Especially with her history. But her medications should help with that. She shook it off, trying not to think about her past. Skyler couldn't change it; it was who she was. She had no intentions of ending up in bed with this guy, however. He was cute, but she couldn't see it going that far. He wasn't her usual go-to. He seemed like the nice guy type that girls like her never went for, despite the fact that they should.
"Nice to meet you, Vincent," she said. "Skyler Brigham." She reached her hand out to shake his. "Sophomore, English Major," she said, feeling kind of silly. She had no idea what she was planning on doing with her major, so she hoped he didn't ask her. Honestly, she felt like she should change it, but she wasn't sure what else she would do. Skyler took a sip of her coffee, and smiled at the boy. "So, what brought you to Copper Harbor?" she asked.

Vincent's luck with girls was pretty non existent. Sure he had good looks and money so girls always acted interested in him at first until they realized that he was so awkward and that they wouldn't get to far without some effort. He had yet to meet any one who wanted to put in that much effort and so he had pretty much remained single. He was a good guy, would treat the right girl like a queen, but it would take time and most girls just weren't interested in it. He offered love and stability while girls seemed more interested in adventure and mystery. Sure he got it, but it was just who he was and he didn't see it changing any time soon. You would think a guy that grew up with two sisters who had their friends around all the time would be better at this.
English Major hu? Well that was sort of a relief, maybe at least he could have a intelligent conversation with the girl. Or at least one that didn't revolve around clothes, celebrity couples and gossip. He got stuck with a female partner in his science class and the girl drove him batty talking about such things. He now knew that Kevin was dating rebecca, but rebecca was cheating on him with Adam. He wasn't sure why this information was important to him, yet he had no choice but to put up with the annoying girl.
My father owns a business and expects me to take over it when he retires. My life is pretty much planned out for me after school, so Copper Harbor seemed like a good place to escape to for a while he said. He loved them, but it wasn't easy. Vincent didn't usually go into details on what kind of business he was involved in as he wasn't one to gloat about his money. As far as one one was concerned it was a small shop on the corner of nowhere. Of course with his younger sister now at the school things may be different, the youngest Altman sure like to throw around money.
What's your favorite book then? he asked, she was a English major so of course she had to like reading right? That was a requirement or something? The question came off as a bit direct but he was not good at the small talk. Personally English was always his favorite subject growing up, he had been good at reading and writting. Though it wasn't exactly a fruitful career most of the time, he wasn't about to tell her that though. Vincent always thought on the side of rationality, that's how he was taught. At times he wished he could let go and be spontanious but he just had to think things through thoroughly.

Skyler never had much luck with guys. She would do great for the first few months. She was pretty, intelligent, and her moods were finally stable. But typically, when she confessed to her Bipolar Disorder, the guys ran for the hills. She had been branded as 'crazy' to most. She hated the label, but she knew it was a trade off for having a mental illness. Something she would just have to live with for the rest of her life. She figured one day, someone would see past her disorder, and actually see her for who she was. And maybe, they'd actually want to be with her, too. She had dreams about finding the right guy for her. One who understood she wasn't always going to be stable, and they agreed to help her. Maybe she was reaching a little bit, but hey, a girl can always dream.
Skyler shook her head in disbelief. She wasn't sure how she would feel about having her whole life planned for her. On one hand, she wouldn't have to worry herself about picking the wrong major...but on the other, she would be under the control of someone else. She couldn't imagine being in his shoes. She gave him a sympathetic smile. "How do you feel about taking over the company?" she asked, and then bit her tongue. She was getting a bit personal quite fast. "Sorry if that's too intrusive," she said, smiling at him again. He was quite attractive, after all.
"Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson, hands down." she said. "It's about this girl who avoids her hometown like the plague. Until she had to go back to help her aunts out. All sorts of stories from her past come out, and it ends up that someone was murdered..." she trailed off, letting her excitement wear down. "Sorry, I got carried away," she said. "Do you have a favorite book?" She was always into readers. A guy who read for fun was sexy too her. Intelligence was sexy. She took a sip of her coffee, and inhaled the scent.
